Future of the USA???

Jer. 18:1-10 - written for the people of Israel.   BUT - God's dealing with nations of the world is still happening.
Are you - Optimistic?  Pessimistic?

Pessimist says:  headed for doom
failing education system
aging population
immigration crisis; "melting pot" is now patchwork quilt
corrupt corporate leadership
inefficient government - only 19% of the American people show optimism about our future based on how our government is working!

Continued/growing racism
radical Muslims among us
school shootings

Changing views of morality - no common consensus for right & wrong
breakdown of family life - 60% of kids spend some time in single parent home

redefinition of marriage
confusion over gender

national debt/out of control spending
entitlement attitude - growing welfare state
consumer mentality - "consume!  don't produce!"
personal rights take precedent over the "greater good"
failing moral leadership @ ALL levels of government   - quote:  "Stupidity and power makes a bad combo"

rising medical costs
polarized political system (50/50) - key factor in why 80% of American people = pessimistic about our future.  Those on right see us leaning left, & that's bad direction!
On the other hand, those on the left see us leaning right and that's bad direction!
So, all tend toward Pessimism!!!

The Optimist says:
Look where we've gone/come in 400 years  (1600)
We're now the wealthiest, most powerful nation in history!!

We survived:
- a war of Independence - against a major world power
- a devastating Civil War (with post war healing and reconstruction)
- 2 world Wars as well as Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan
- the Great Depression (&multiple recessions)
- the Cold War

Still have a wealth of natural resources
USA - world's largest exporter of foods
and spend smaller % of household income for food than any other country!!!

We have a chosen government (therefore theoretically fixable government!)
few nearby enemies / powerful military
and a national pride!!  (example:  see tears at the singing of the National Anthem)
AND always had a polarized political system!

Seen recent drops in violent crime, teen pregnancy, domestic violence, divorce, AND unemployment rates!

We are blessed with --- abundant energy supplies
                                     entrepreneurial spirit (can do attitude!)
                                     investment capital  (individual opportunities)
                                     access to higher education/technical training
                                     unrivaled technological genius and creativity
political stability (compared to much of the world)

USA is still the model for liberty around the world.
People want IN, not OUT!

"There is not better time or place to live than in America today!!"

On one hand, there are good arguments on both sides.
However, are secular arguments don't factor in God (as does Jeremiah, as should we.)
Is a huge difference in what the Christian view should be.

Question:  What would your assessment of Israel be IF had no knowledge of God's part? - in Egypt? the Exodus?  the Wilderness?  the conquest?  the Exile?  the Diaspora?

Bible teaches - God is.... (1) Sovereign (Ruler)
                                      (2) Concerned - (with His creation/people)
                                      (3)  Active  (interactive) - doing something

Therefore:  brief overview...

(1).  God (ultimately, finally) forms, directs, preserves, destroys nations!  example:  Jeremiah text
Example:  Gen. 17:20 - Ishmael
Deut. 28:49-51 - (curses for disobedience)

But on the other hand,
(2)  Man's actions contribute to God's decisions  - (Jeremiah text)  Jer. 18:11-13

So ..... Psalm 33:12,  Prov. 14:34

Our Part??????????  More exactly ------ Your Part??????

#1 Seek God - example:  a _________ nation is made up of ________ people.  (fill in the blanks)
You find Him in Jesus Christ.   John 14:6   Not sufficient to just have a vague notion of God.

#2.  Seek the good of your nation
This = your ministry field.  your responsibility  (example = Daniel.  He faithfully served Babylon without compromising his faith)
Includes:  (1)  prayer - note here .... Psalm 119:126
               (2) support - (broad subject ..... includes taxes!!)
               (3)  criticism  (Jeremiah)
               (4)  praise

#3.  (seek to) Be salt and Light - (Matt. 5:13-16)
Salt and Light = minority substance that goes a long way!!!
On one hand, only God can bring revival/reversal
However, we're called to be part of that

#4.  Follow god even if your nation turns away.   Christians often called to minister to hostile society
Example:  Christianity and Roman Empire in 300 years!!!
(our nation is not our Sovereign - not our Savior)

#5.  Don't give up on your nation.
"God does not quickly abandon His people" - Lamentations 3:19-26

#6.  (while doing all the above....)
Keep in mind your true nation. - Phil. 3:20,

So,  1 Pet. 2:9-10

Deut. 4:5-9, Deut. 30:19

Dads Make a Difference

1 Tim. 5:8 - context = material things (needs)
                 - application is much greater.

Some Stats:    (in the last decade, is a larger percentage of fatherless homes in the U.S. than anywhere else in the world)
Dads & Sons
1)  71% of High School dropouts come from fatherless homes.
2)  90% of homeless runaways come from a fatherless home.
3)  70% of all juveniles in state reform schools come from a fatherless home.
4)  85% of imprisoned youth grew up in a fatherless home.
5)  43% of adult inmates grew up in a single parent home - generally without a dad.
6  80% of rapists come from fatherless homes.
7  crime rates in ALL categories are highest among those raised without a dad
8)  boys raised in a single parent home are twice as likely to commit a crime that leads to incarceration
9)  boys raised in step families are 3X as likely to commit a crime that leads to incarceration
10)  95% of men on death row HATED their fathers.

Dads &Daughters
1)  Teenage girls living in a fatherless home are 60% more likely to be involved in premarital sex than those in a 2 parent home
2)  90% of girls with anorexia (nervosa) lack a close relationship with their father.
3)  girls growing up in a home were dad is absent are far more likely to exhibit:
           A.  low motivation for achievement
           B.  a tendency to choose immediate gratification rather than self-discipline for later rewards
           C.  greater tendency toward group influence, peer pressure
          D.  lower self esteem
4)  a woman's self esteem is largely determined by 2 men in her life - ie:  her dad and her 1st. husband

On one hand, the stats may vary.  However, the pattern is consistent!    In other words, kids growing up in a home with the father present have a distinct advantage!!
They are less likely to live in poverty, abuse drugs and alcohol, do jail time, be sexually active as teens, even be obese!!
They do better in school, have a larger vocabulary!  (doesn't refer to curse words),  take healthy risks (which translates into confidence and abilities.  This less in childhood.  - adolescence and adulthood

Point is NOT the single moms can't  (many do well!!)
Point = dads Make A Difference  (MAD)

Conversion Stats:
When a child is the 1st. to convert, the family will convert 4% of the time.
When mom is the 1st, the family will convert 17% of the time.
When dad is 1st, the family will convert 93% of the time!

Church Attendance As Adults  - parallel stats in England & Switzerland
If only mom attends church, 30% of children will attend as adults.
If only dad attends church, 70% of children will attend as adults.  Why?  (When Dad doesn't attend, says to child, "not a grown up thing!!)

Doesn't mean moms are less important.  Point = dads MAD!!!  Which ADDS gravity weight to 1 Tim. 5:8

As a BELIEVING DAD you are to provide

(1)  Training - Prov. 22:6 - generally speaking
(Jewish understanding = training in LIFE and LORD - Deut. 6:6-7  "your children"
Dad to be early teacher, a Primary teacher, a lifelong teacher.  Therefore, must be a lifelong learner.

(2)  Discipline - Prov. 19:18, 13:24, 23:13-14 - Big difference between spanking and BEATING!!  Heb. 12:6

(3)  Reasonable training and discipline - (balanced)
Eph. 6:4, Col. 3:21

(4)  A leadership model - 1 Tim. 3:4 - "deacons ... manage"
how dos a boy learn to be a husband, father?  girl, a wife, mom?

(5)  Blessing  (Jacob blessed sons, Jesus blessed children)
but this is more than prayer, declaration!!
Definition:  When communicate to someone (verbally/other) that he/she = lovable, valuable, special = Blessing!!
We all long for blessing, need blessing, it's within your power to give it!  - Prov. 3:27

(6)  An inheritance - Prov. 13:22 - this is more than money.  Prov. 14:26 - leaves a Faith they can turn to!! - moral integrity, legacy

Note:  Prov. 20:7   "_______ therefore _______"

SUMMARY:

#1.  Men Make a difference  - (not belittling women)

#2.  This is by God's design - (His intent) - not by society, or by Christians
So,
#3.  You are naturally equipped - (therefore naturally responsible!!)
But,
#4.  You are seriously flawed - (Rom.3:23) - you won't always measure up.
Therefore, to be effective,
#5.  You must commit, train, and develop yourself - it will not just happen naturally because you're a guy.
1 Kings. 2:1-2 - David to Solomon - "man up"

Available resources?
     God's Son - salvation
     God's Spirit
God's Word - have enough here to keep busy whole life
     God's People
     God's Presence and God's Grace - Josh. 1:9

Family Series: Laying a Proper Foundation for Children

Being are in Family Series and this week we start Day Camp = focus is on Kids!

Observations on:
1)  Age of accepting Christ - stats refer to a "4 -14 window" - acceptance of Christ at about 68%

2)  Moral and Spiritual development - coming to a stance of what's right and wrong.  Moral foundation set by the age of 9.  This foundation starts forming as early as age 2.  Is way easier to form foundation from the start then to have to re-form it later.

3)  Reverse child evangelism  - Kids bringing parents to Christ
On one hand, kids responding to the gospel.
On the other hand, kids carrying the gospel!

4)  Primary influences  - peers?  society?  media?  - at age 4?  at age 6?
IF the primary caregivers are not the primary influences then something is seriously wrong with the relationship!!!

The last two weeks = "foundations of r marriage" - building on Christ, building on love and Respect

TODAY:  Laying a Proper Foundation for Children  - Prov. 22:6
On one hand, kids lead to teens lead to adults -- make own decisions/choices
However, IF a proper foundation is laid, IF the blueprints are made available?   Chances are much greater that they will build on Christian principles, precepts.

#1.  Develop your own Biblical Worldview - because, you can't pass on what you don't possess
2 Tim.2:1-2

#2.  Teach the faith - (1) the content of the faith, (2) the story of the faith, (3)  the story of their faith.

#3.  Model the faith  - "60% of learning that affects behavior is based on WATCHING someone we know and trust" - 1 Cor. 4:16-17 - "Timothy knows what I teach and how I live"

#4.  Start Early - building vs remodeling

#5.  Focus on Character (NOT achievement!)
Because - if they have character, ... achievement will follow!!  100% of Revolutionary parents agreed with this!
They will achieve, move ahead.  God's primary concern is your character, not your vocation.

#6. Be intentional - more apt to hit what you aim for!!
(a)  what are you shooting for?  (b)  is it Biblical?  God's desire?
BUT:
#7.  Don't push - on one hand, seek to be influential/persuasive.  Is a delicate balance!!  However, they must choose!!

#8.  Insist on servant hood  - shows kid that he/she is NOT center of the Universe!
(which means ..... you gotta serve, too!! - serve other people

#9.  Pray  - Make A Difference in the child - James 5:16.
Make a Difference in you!!!  if want to be a better parent, a better partner,  must be a better person.   Would change your mightily.

#10.  Don't give us  - example:  the baptism of the Georges - Father's Day - 2001 - because, you never know!!!

APPLICATION:   for
#1.  your children (grand children, etc)
#2.  Our children!  Those God has granted to OBC - opportunity to influence, persuade.   ie:  Sunday School, AWANA, Bible Time, Day Camp!!!

So.....  #1)  GO and DO!!  (family)

#2)  Come and help!  (Day Camp)

Family Series - The Rock Beneath Our Foundation

last week = Eph. 5 - Basic Marital Instruction
(ie:  Love & Respect forming the BASE of marital relationship)

Point:  things important to a good marriage will crack/fail if not on Solid foundation.

BUT ... there is a problem here!!!  ie:  your foundation will be faulty
Because:  (1)  you're faulty - ("seriously flawed")  - Rom. 3:23
therefore, (2)  won't always express Love and Respect!
and, (3)  spouse is faulty
therefore, 4  won't always experience Love and Respect!
As vital as this information is, there will be breaks in the foundation!!

ANSWER:  A foundation beneath the foundation.
OR a ROCK!!

For the Christian - the Rock beneath the foundation = Christ.
1 Cor. 3:10-11

Point:  We often overlook the most basic Christian tenets when dealing with marriage and family
YET ... they underlie all other principles!!!

So ... to start at the beginning = to Build on Christ.
To build on Christ is to:
#1.  Accept Him as Savior   Rom. 10;9-10
 ie:  gospel =  A dmit - are a sinner
B elieve - Christ is who He says He is
                      C onfess Him verbally
And:
#2.  Embrace Him as Lord  (master/boss)
#1 & 2 separated for illustration and clarity, but whether this is possible,  it is certainly not reasonable (not wise)
Which results in:
#3. Forgiveness and Restoration  - Now can have a Relationship with God, (creator, designer, "lover of your soul"!)
Also.....
#4.  New Birth - John 3:3, John 1:10-13, 2 Cor. 5:17
Something happens which results in new heart (affections)
+ new mind - (thinking, reasoning)
                                         =     new lifestyle  (action)
 Which leads to:
#5.  Sanctification  (setting apart)
ie:  the process of personal development, personal betterment, becoming what created to be, saved to be.  Eph. 2:10     Can function better than before.

Do you want to be a better parent?  better partner?  Start here with being a better person!!!

The Focus  of Bulk of Scripture = (1)  develop your relationship with God
                                                    (2)  develop yourself according to His will, desire, design!!

Add 1 more:  ie:  with this beginning should come either:
#6.  A new set of rules or a new appreciation for those rules
(ie:  Scripture:  God's Revelation to us, for us.)

Loot at list:  ask if it could Make A Difference (M.A.D.) in your marriage, family??

(1)  Accept Jesus as Savior
(2)  Embrace Jesus as Lord
(3)  experience a new beginning  (change of heart, mind)
(4)  begin a process of betterment
(5)  learn and follow the rules of God
This is before the Love and Respect stuff!

On one hand, is no guarantee your family will respond.
However, FAR MORE LIKELY!!!
Can't change them, but can influence!

Your Need?  Your Response?

1.  Accept

2.  Enthrone (re-enthrone)

3.  Commit  (re-commit)  to process of "betterment" at whatever stage you are at.

4.  learn, follow His rules

Result = Win/Win!! - for you, spouse, kids, community

Family Series - Christian Marriage 101

BASIC Christian marital instruction - Eph. 5

Word "BASIC" = forming the base, the starting point, the foundation.
Example:  the concrete and steel that under girds and supports the (visible) structure.

On one hand - the foundation is NOT the whole house!!
BUT - it is that on which the whole house stands!!

So - Basics - Eph. 5:21-33 - these truths will work for any couple.  However, will work better if the couple is Christian.

I)  Husbands - love your wife as Christ loves the church.
The word "Agape" = to value, treasure, cherish
to treat as the Chosen One, THE Special One.
Means provide more than physical needs = intimate, feminine needs - which are God given and legitimate

This (Agape) love is:
(1) Chosen = a decision to love her...
         (a) according to God's instruction
         (b) according to her needs - not yours!
Therefore:
(2) Intentional .. which = (a) on purpose
                                      (b) with a  purpose which = to edify, buildup!!

(3)  Active - ie:  more than attitude or feeling
                   - (a) shown, manifest, and (b) shown IN PINK!!  (her way)  Rom. 5:8

(4)  Sacrificial ... you give up to build up
also,
(5)  Beneficial - ie:  to you!!  ie.  build up your wife... to your advantage!!
"happy wife, happy life"
 also,
(6) Possible - else it wouldn't be commanded.   (note:  not perfectly possible because are dealing with 2 flawed people!!)
and,
(7)  Primary = the concrete and steel that under-girds!!

II)   Wives - Respect your husband
honor, admire, look up to
Show confidence in his abilities, judgments, intentions (toward you)
to treat him as if he were competent, capable, trustworthy

This Respect is:
(1)  Chosen = a decision to honor him.
                 (a) according to God's instruction
                (b)  according to his needs
Therefore:
(2)  Intentional which = (a) on purpose
                                   (b) with a purpose - which = edify!!  - Prov. 14:1
(Side note - Gen. 2:18 - "helper" used in the Scripture for God, Holy Spirit, and Eve  - does that speak to your role?  influence?  importance?)

(3)  Active - ie:  it's (a) shown, displayed, manifest   (b) in BLUE!! - his way.

(4)  Sacrificial - because often difficult to show!

(5)  Beneficial - ie:  for you!!  Build up him = benefit you!!
also
(6)  Possible - else wouldn't be commanded
and
(7)  Primary = the concrete and steel that under girds.

Next week - the foundation beneath the foundation - ie:  Christ

Family Series - 7 Steps to Family Blessing

Been doing the "Family Series" since 1989.

Why??  Because it's IMPORTANT!   See Stats:

1)  Socially/nationally - (to society/nation)
Typical summaries from historians:
"stable families are essential to building a stable nation:
"no society has ever thrived without durable, cohesive, traditional families"
Note:  the US has the worst marital failure rate in the world!!!

2)  personally/individually  (people)
Example:  Gallup poll - "how important are the various aspects of your life?"
#1 answer Always is family - 47% "very important", 49% - "extremely important" = 96%

1990 Money Magazine commissioned Gallup to poll their subscribers on goals, dreams, aspirations, etc.
#1 = "having a happy home life" @97.8%

National Opinion Research Center polls ... "family is un-important to me" - 3%
""source of greatest SATISFACTION in my life = "family" - 87%..

3)  Solid family = God's will/desire/heart
But that means more than "happy" = "Blessed!!-
                        more than "pleasing" = Beneficial
You can pursue happiness and miss the blessing
However, you can pursue blessing and gain happiness with it!!

So, again in 2018 - we go to Deuteronomy (2nd law)
Deut. 6
(1) the setting - at edge of Promised Land the 2nd. time - Moses repeats the Law given at Mt. Sinai
(2)  the opening Summary - Deut. 6:1-2

This is not "so you'll live to be 100 years old".
= "so generations will thrive, prosper, be blessed in the land"

SO - we look at the passage NOT as a way to experience national blessings, but as a way to experience family blessings (which lead to national blessings)

Deut. 6:1-25 literally to the nation of Israel - Vs. 12 - 'be careful not to forget'

Do you want to experience God's blessing?  in immediate family?  extended family?  in church?  in community?  in nation?

Basis, beginning of the blessing from Deut. 6 - condensed, shortened, re-ordered...
"7 Steps to Family Blessing"

#1.  Hear God - Deut. 6:4 - "Shema"
(A)  He has revealed Himself
now,
(B) (in the Hebrew) if don't respond ... you didn't HEAR!!!
Makes it an issue of choice (not ability)  Jer. 5:21, Matt. 13:9 (parable), Rev. 2:29 - (7 times to the 7 churches)

#2.  Love God - how important???? -->  Matt. 22:34-38
This alsochoice!!   "agape" (God love) - matter of head and heart.  Regardless of whether object is lovable or not.

#3.  Fear the Lord = stand in awe of, respect, give reverence to.
Example:  contrast love for your puppy does NOT mean you revere him!!  Prov. 1:7
"fear" includes manifestation  ie:  Evident .... HE occupies the throne in the home - NOT pleasure, business, sports, etc.

#4.  Be careful ... to obey,  to not forget - compare  Deut. 8:10-18 - distraction of comes with prosperity!!

#5.  Teach your kids - Deut. 6:6-7

And,
#6.  Tell them "why" - Deut. 6:20-21
Which = personal testimony, family testimony
Saying, on one hand "I don't know where you'll go", but, on the other hand, "Let me tell you where you come from!!"

#7.  Do what's right ... IN HIS SIGHT!! - Deut. 6:18
Which is not what YOU deem right!!!
Is HARD!!!  Because we all think we know what's best for me!!

Therefore, the typical Christian - has Jesus in heart, but self on throne.

So, want a happy family?  or ... a Blessed family?

Sunday, May 6, 2018

2nd. Peter - Last Days

2 Pet. 3 - referring to Last Days = last time - (Jesus' 1st. return to His 2nd. return)

2 Pet.3:1-8  from Psm. 90:4   Vs. 2 = old testament  - God's spoken word (vs. 5-7) makes it all happen.

2 Pet. 3:9 - Very important verse - God is patient because He's merciful and kind and good.
with Ezek. 18:23, 32  and 1 Tim. 2:3-4

2 Pet. 3:10-12 - The End comes suddenly and Violently!! - Isa. 34:4, Joel 2:30-31, (but not also - Joel 2:32 !)
We tend to forget that the end will come violently.

2 Pet. 3;13 = will it all be new?  or Re-newed?  Many different views - Pre-millennial, post-millennial, NO millennial.   Peter's point = it will happen!!

2 Pet. 3:14-15 - "Because He is patient,Salvation is still available!!   Illustration:  the Prodigal Son!  Luke 15.

2 Pet. 3:16-18 - Peter refers to Paul's writings as Scripture.

Observations:

(1)  Miracles are not the norm!  were only three periods of great miracles from the time of Moses to today.
And,
(2)  Divine mystery will always accompany the Christian faith  (when?  how?  why the wait?)  We will never understand all that God has for us.
So....
(3)  Scoffers will come.   These are more than skeptics - they deliberately forget!! - Rom. 1:32
because we won't have miracles all the time and won't have all the answers,  Divine mystery remains.
And,
(4)  they will distort the scriptures  because they want to follow "own evil desire", not follow God's desire (will).  They want their will.

Peter's whole point in this chapter:

BUT IF God can create, flood, sustain by His Word

THEN He can also fulfill promises of Christ's return  -- by His Word!!!

Therefore:  (1)  "make every effort" - (2 Pet. 3:14 compare with 2nd. Pet. 1:5)

(2)  be on guard...  2 Pet. 3:17 - "lest fall
Example:  Peter - of the 12, of the inner 3, unofficial leader of the Apostles, "the Rock" - denied Christ!!!
don't be discouraged -- by the length of time
don't be distracted - by the world - Heb. 2:1

AND
(3)  grow ... 2 Pet. 3:18 "in the grace  He offers - freely given
"in the Knowledge" you can acquire

Comparison:  Christian walk to bicycle riding:  ie.  stop moving and fall over!!!   Stop growing and fall away!
